A flat battery at 2am is a quick way to turn a great campsite into a long night. Whether you are keeping a 12V fridge cold beside the caravan, charging mobiles at a bush camp or running lights for the kids, this solar panel camping guide will help you put together a practical portable power setup without buying more gear than you need.
Solar is not a magic replacement for planning. Panel output changes with weather, shade, season and how well the panel is aimed. But with the right panel, regulator and battery, it is one of the easiest ways to stay off-grid longer and avoid relying on a powered site.
Start with what you need to run
The best solar setup starts with your power use, not the biggest panel on the shelf. A couple of LED camp lights and phone chargers use very little energy. A compressor fridge, water pump, inverter, CPAP machine or diesel heater can change the equation quickly.
Most 12V camping gear lists its current draw in amps or power in watts. To estimate daily battery use, multiply the amps by the number of hours the item will actually run. A fridge may draw 3 amps while its compressor is operating, but it cycles on and off. In mild weather it could use far less than its maximum rating; in a hot northern summer, with the fridge in the sun and opened constantly, it can use considerably more.
For a simple weekend setup, allow roughly 20 to 40 amp-hours per day for a well-managed fridge, then add your lighting, device charging and other accessories. This is only a starting point. If you are running an inverter for coffee machines, power tools or household appliances, solar requirements climb fast. Those loads are often better suited to a larger battery bank, generator backup or a powered campsite.
Choosing a panel size for camping
Portable solar panels are commonly available from compact 100W units through to larger 200W and 300W folding panels. More wattage gives you more charging potential, but panel size is only useful if your battery, regulator and available camp space can support it.
A 100W panel can be a sensible choice for topping up a battery while running lights and charging devices, especially on short trips with good sunshine. For campers using a 12V fridge, a 160W to 200W portable panel is often a more comfortable starting point. Caravan travellers or families staying off-grid for several days may prefer 250W or 300W, particularly when daily power use is higher.
Do not expect the number printed on the panel to be its all-day output. A 200W panel may perform close to its rating in ideal midday conditions, but clouds, heat, dust, poor orientation and cable losses all reduce production. In much of Australia, planning around four to five useful sun hours per day is safer than assuming full rated output from sunrise to sunset.
Buying a little extra panel capacity is usually good insurance. It gives you room to recover after an overcast day, a shaded morning or a busy evening around camp. The trade-off is cost, weight and storage space in the ute, wagon or caravan tunnel boot.
Portable, fixed or folding solar panels?
Portable panels are popular because they can be moved into direct sun while the vehicle or caravan stays under a tree. That flexibility matters in Australian campgrounds, where shade can make a major difference to comfort. A folding solar panel is easy to pack, set up and reposition through the day, making it a strong all-round option for tent campers, touring couples and caravan travellers.
Fixed roof-mounted panels are convenient. They charge while you drive or stop for lunch, and there is no panel to unpack at every camp. Their weakness is simple: if the vehicle is parked in shade, so is the panel. Fixed systems work well for frequent travellers and can be paired with a portable blanket or folding panel for extra charging at camp.
Solar blankets are lightweight and pack down small, which suits limited storage. They are handy for hikers with a base camp, compact camper trailers and anyone chasing a lighter setup. They can be less rigid and more exposed to damage than framed folding panels, so check that cables, connectors and mounting points are suited to regular use.
Your solar regulator matters
A solar regulator controls the charge going from the panel to the battery. It protects the battery from overcharging and helps deliver usable power safely. The two common types are PWM and MPPT.
PWM regulators are generally more affordable and can be perfectly suitable for smaller, straightforward systems. MPPT regulators cost more but are usually more efficient, particularly when panel voltage is higher than battery voltage or conditions are less than ideal. For a quality 160W, 200W or larger portable panel, an MPPT regulator is often worth considering because it helps make better use of the panel you have paid for.
Check that the regulator is compatible with your battery chemistry. AGM, gel, flooded lead-acid and lithium batteries have different charging requirements. Lithium batteries are lighter, offer more usable capacity and generally charge quickly, but they need a suitable lithium profile and a battery management system. If you are replacing an older AGM battery with lithium, make sure every part of the charging setup is compatible, not just the solar panel.
Build a safe camping solar setup
A dependable solar kit has more than a panel. You need a suitable deep-cycle battery or portable power station, a regulator, correctly rated cables and secure connectors. If you are connecting directly to a battery, an inline fuse close to the battery positive terminal is a sensible safety measure. Use cable that is long enough to place the panel in sun, but not so thin or excessively long that voltage drop wastes your charging power.
Anderson-style connectors are common on camping and caravan systems because they are tough, easy to connect and suited to higher current. Keep connectors clean, dry and protected from dirt. A loose or corroded connection can cause charging problems that look like a faulty panel.
Place portable panels where they will not become a trip hazard, blow over in wind or sit where kids, pets and passing campers can damage them. Secure them with pegs, weights or a stable stand when conditions demand it. Never drape a panel over a hot bonnet or put it under a clear vehicle window expecting it to charge properly.
Getting better results from your panel
Solar works best when the panel faces the sun with minimal shade. Even shade over one section of a panel can significantly cut its output, so look out for branches, awnings, clotheslines and the shadow cast by your own caravan.
Set up the panel early, then move it once or twice as the sun changes position. Tilting the panel towards the sun can improve charging, particularly in winter or later in the afternoon. Wipe off dust, leaves and bird droppings with a soft damp cloth when needed. It is basic maintenance, but it makes a difference on long trips through dry country.
Use a battery monitor rather than guessing from a basic voltage display alone. Voltage can be misleading while a battery is charging or under load. A proper monitor shows the current flowing in and out and gives a clearer picture of remaining capacity. This helps you decide whether to conserve power, reposition the panel or take a drive to recharge through a vehicle charging system.
Plan for cloudy days and high-demand gear
Solar is ideal for quiet, low-cost power, but it has limits. Consecutive wet days, dense forest camps and short winter days can leave even a well-sized system behind. Reduce demand before chasing more watts: keep the fridge ventilated and shaded, pre-chill food at home, run lights only where needed and charge devices during daylight.
For extended remote travel, it can make sense to combine solar with charging from the alternator while driving. A suitable DC-DC charger can provide reliable charging on travel days, while solar maintains the battery when you stay put. This combination is particularly practical for caravan trips, fishing camps and longer outback routes where the weather will not always cooperate.
