Caravan Tyre Pressure: Get It Right Before Towing

A caravan that feels unsettled behind the tow vehicle can turn a relaxing run up the coast into hard work. Before blaming the wind, road surface or weight distribution, check your caravan tyre pressure. It is one of the quickest, lowest-cost checks you can make before heading away, yet it has a major effect on towing stability, braking, tyre wear and fuel use.
There is no single pressure that suits every caravan. The correct figure depends on the van’s tyres, axle load, wheel rating and the actual weight you are carrying. The reliable answer is always found on your caravan’s tyre and loading placard, then checked against the tyre manufacturer’s load and inflation information where required.
Why caravan tyre pressure matters on the road
Tyres carry the entire load of your caravan. When their pressure is too low, the sidewalls flex more than they should. That creates heat, particularly on long highway runs, hot days and rough regional roads. Excess heat can damage the tyre internally and raises the risk of a failure when you are far from the next town.
Low pressure also allows the tyre to squirm across the road surface. You may notice vague handling, extra caravan sway, slower steering response and uneven shoulder wear. It can also increase rolling resistance, meaning your tow vehicle works harder and uses more fuel.
Too much pressure has its own drawbacks. An over-inflated tyre has a smaller contact patch with the road, which can reduce grip and make the ride harsher. On a caravan, that harsher ride sends more shock through the suspension, cabinetry, appliances and gear. Centre tread wear is another common clue that a tyre has spent too long over-inflated.
Correct pressures help the tyres carry their designed load, run at a safer temperature and provide predictable handling. It is a small pre-trip job that supports every other part of safe towing.
Where to find the correct caravan tyre pressure
Start with the caravan manufacturer’s placard. It is commonly fitted near the entry door, on a chassis rail, inside a locker or in the owner’s manual. This placard should state the recommended cold tyre pressure and tyre size for the van as it left the manufacturer.
The word cold matters. Cold pressure means the tyres have not been driven on for at least a few hours and have been sitting out of direct heat where possible. Driving warms the air inside the tyre and raises the pressure naturally. Do not let air out of a warm tyre simply because the reading is higher than the cold figure.
Also read the tyre sidewall. It shows the maximum load and maximum inflation pressure for that tyre, but this is not automatically the pressure you should run. The sidewall figure is a limit, not a universal setting. Your caravan’s placard and the tyre maker’s load table are the right starting points.
If you have changed tyre size, wheels, axle capacity or suspension, the original placard may no longer apply exactly. The same goes for older vans with missing or unreadable information. In these cases, get advice from a qualified tyre professional or caravan service specialist. They can match your actual axle loads to an appropriate pressure using the tyre manufacturer’s data.
Load changes the answer
A caravan can be within its overall ATM while still placing too much weight on one axle or one side. Water tanks, batteries, generators, recovery gear, food, camping furniture and a full front boot all add up quickly. The pressure that was suitable for an empty van at the dealer may not be suitable for a fully loaded family trip.
For the most useful result, weigh the caravan as you travel. That means loaded with the normal gear, gas bottles, water, food and anything stored in the ute or tow vehicle that affects ball weight. Ideally, obtain individual axle weights and side-to-side weights as well as the total weight. This shows whether the tyres are carrying the load evenly and whether your packing needs attention.
Do not use tyre pressure to fix poor weight distribution. If one side of the caravan is heavily loaded, move gear where practical. Heavy items should sit low and close to the axle line, while keeping ball weight within the limits for both the caravan and tow vehicle. Correct loading and correct pressure work together.
How to check caravan tyre pressure properly
A quality tyre pressure gauge is worth keeping in the caravan’s tool kit. Servo gauges can be handy, but their accuracy varies and they are often not convenient when you are packed up at camp. A reliable digital or dial gauge lets you check pressures at home, at the campsite or before a long day on the road.
Check all tyres before every major trip and at least weekly when travelling. That includes the spare. A spare with low pressure is no help when you need it on a remote roadside.
Use this simple routine:
- Check pressures when tyres are cold, before driving for the day.
- Remove the valve cap, press the gauge squarely onto the valve and record the reading.
- Inflate or release air to match the approved cold pressure for your loaded caravan.
- Refit valve caps tightly to keep dust and moisture out of the valve.
- Inspect the tread, sidewalls and valve stems while you are down there.
Common mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is copying a mate’s tyre pressure. Even two caravans that look similar can have different tyre sizes, load ratings, axle ratings and travelling weights. The right pressure for their tandem van may be wrong for your single-axle camper or off-road caravan.
Another is inflating to the maximum pressure printed on the sidewall without confirming the load requirement. In some applications, higher pressures may be necessary to safely carry a heavy load, but that decision should be based on approved specifications rather than guesswork.
It is also tempting to lower pressures for a softer ride on corrugated or unsealed roads. Lowering pressure can sometimes be appropriate for certain surfaces and speeds, but it is not a casual adjustment. Reduced pressure lowers the tyre’s load capacity and increases heat build-up, especially at highway speeds. If you travel on unsealed roads regularly, seek advice specific to your caravan tyres, loads, road conditions and intended speed. Slow down accordingly and reinflate before returning to sealed roads.
Finally, do not overlook tyre age. A tyre can have good tread depth and still be unsuitable due to age, cracking, UV exposure or internal damage. Caravan tyres often age out before they wear out because many vans spend long periods parked. Check the date code, look for cracks around the sidewalls and have any doubtful tyre assessed before a big trip.
Pressure monitoring systems: useful, not a substitute
Tyre pressure monitoring systems can provide extra peace of mind, particularly on long touring routes where a tyre problem may develop between fuel stops. A good system can alert you to a rapid pressure drop or excessive temperature before it becomes a serious incident.
They are not a replacement for a cold-pressure check, however. Sensors can have flat batteries, limits in accuracy or delayed alerts. Treat a monitoring system as an extra set of eyes, while your gauge, regular inspections and correct loading remain the essentials.
Before you pull out of the driveway
Take two minutes to walk around the caravan. Confirm that every tyre is at its approved cold pressure, valve caps are fitted, wheel nuts have been checked to the manufacturer’s torque specification and there are no visible cuts, bulges or objects lodged in the tread. Recheck after the first hour or two of a trip if you have recently fitted new tyres, changed wheels or loaded the van differently.
A well-prepared caravan makes the drive calmer, safer and easier on your gear. Pack smart, keep a decent gauge in the toolbox and give your tyres the same attention you give the hitch, brakes and lights before the next adventure.
