Inverter Generator vs Power Station for Camping

A flat battery at camp is annoying. A flat battery when you need to run a caravan fridge, charge medical equipment or keep the lights on through a blackout is another matter. The inverter generator vs power station choice comes down to one practical question: do you need lots of power for a long time, or quiet stored power for smaller everyday jobs?
Both can make life easier away from a powered site. But they work very differently, and buying the wrong one can leave you carrying extra weight, spending more than necessary, or unable to run the gear you packed it for.
Inverter generator vs power station: the basic difference
An inverter generator makes electricity by burning petrol. Unlike a conventional open-frame generator, an inverter model produces cleaner, more stable power suitable for sensitive electronics such as mobiles, laptops, camera chargers and many modern appliances. It generally adjusts engine speed to the load, which helps reduce fuel use and noise when you are not drawing maximum power.
A portable power station stores electricity in an internal battery, usually lithium-based. It provides 12V, USB and 240V outlets through an inbuilt inverter. You charge it before leaving home, from a 12V vehicle outlet, mains power or compatible solar panels. Once the battery is empty, it needs time and an energy source to recharge.
The key numbers are different. Generators are usually described by their output in watts, such as 2,000W. Power stations have an output rating in watts too, but their battery capacity is measured in watt-hours, such as 1,000Wh. Output tells you what an item can run at one time. Capacity tells you roughly how long it can run it.
For example, a 1,000Wh power station may run a 50W camp fridge for around 15 to 18 hours once real-world losses are considered. It may be rated to power a 1,000W appliance, but only briefly. A generator with a 2,000W continuous rating can keep supplying that level of power for as long as it has fuel, subject to its fuel tank and duty limits.
Choose a power station for quiet, simple camp power
A power station is often the better fit for tent camping, short family trips, school camps and relaxed off-grid weekends where noise matters. It starts with the press of a button, creates no exhaust fumes and can sit nearby while you charge devices, run LED lighting, operate a CPAP machine or keep a small fridge cold.
It is particularly handy where generator use is restricted. Many campgrounds have quiet-hour rules, while some do not allow generators at all. Even when permitted, a generator can quickly become unpopular if it runs late into the evening. A power station lets you keep the campsite peaceful while still having useful power on hand.
Solar charging adds flexibility. With enough sun, a correctly matched solar panel can put energy back into the battery during the day for lights, phones and refrigeration overnight. This setup suits travellers who use modest power and stay put for a few days. It also avoids carrying petrol, checking oil and managing fuel storage.
There are limits. High-draw appliances empty batteries quickly. Electric kettles, toasters, coffee machines, hair dryers, air fryers and heaters may exceed the unit's inverter rating or consume a large share of its battery in minutes. Cloudy weather, shade and short winter days can also make solar recovery slower than expected.
A power station is not automatically lightweight either. Larger models with enough capacity for serious caravan use can be heavy, so check the kilogram figure as well as the watt-hours. If you are lifting it into a ute, wagon or caravan locker, a manageable size matters.
Choose an inverter generator for high loads and long stays
An inverter generator makes sense when your power needs are larger, less predictable or ongoing. Caravan travellers running a microwave, battery charger, power tools or higher-demand appliances will often get more usable runtime from a generator than from a single battery power station.
It is also a practical backup during outages, provided it is operated safely outdoors. You can refuel in minutes rather than waiting hours for a battery to recharge. For a long bush stay, prospecting trip or remote property, that fast refuelling can be the deciding factor.
Inverter generators are generally quieter and more fuel-efficient than traditional generators, but they are not silent. Sound levels vary with load, placement and the surrounding campsite. A generator that seems quiet in a product description can still be noticeable at a close-packed caravan park.
Fuel is another trade-off. You need to carry approved petrol containers, keep fuel away from flames and food areas, and allow for safe transport. Petrol engines also need routine attention, including oil checks, fresh fuel and occasional servicing. If it has been sitting unused for months, test it before a trip rather than assuming it will start when you need it.
Most importantly, never run a generator inside a tent, annex, caravan, garage or enclosed area. Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and exhaust exposure can be fatal. Keep the generator outdoors, well away from doors, windows and vents, and follow the manufacturer's clearance instructions.
Work out what your gear really uses
The best purchase starts with a load check, not a guess. Look at the label on each appliance or charger for watts, amps or watt-hours. Add up the appliances you expect to run at the same time, then allow a healthy margin. Motors and compressors can draw a higher surge when starting than their normal running figure.
A campsite setup might include a 40L fridge, a few LED lights, phones, a tablet, a camera battery charger and a CPAP machine. This is usually well within the job for a suitably sized power station, especially with solar support. Add a kettle, microwave or induction cooktop, and the calculation changes quickly.
For caravan use, separate your 12V needs from your 240V wants. A good caravan battery, solar system and DC-DC charger may already handle lighting, water pumps, USB charging and a compressor fridge efficiently. You may only need a generator or power station for topping up batteries, running a laptop, or occasional 240V appliances.
Avoid buying based on peak wattage alone. A unit advertised with a high surge figure may not sustain that output. Check its continuous AC output, battery capacity, recharge time, outlet types and whether the solar input matches the panels you plan to use. For generators, compare continuous output, fuel tank capacity, runtime at a sensible load, noise rating and service support.
Cost, convenience and value over time
Upfront price is only part of the equation. A compact power station can be excellent value for low-power weekends because it needs little maintenance and has no fuel costs. Pairing it with solar can reduce reliance on paid powered sites, although the initial cost rises with battery capacity and panel size.
A quality inverter generator can offer more watts per dollar for heavy-duty use. It may be the more economical choice if you regularly need to run high-draw appliances or recharge a large caravan battery bank. But factor in petrol, oil, servicing, storage and the possibility of campground restrictions.
For many campers, the most useful setup is not strictly one or the other. A power station covers quiet daily charging and overnight essentials, while a generator is kept for longer trips, rapid recharging or demanding appliances. That combination costs more, of course, so it only makes sense if you genuinely use both roles.
A practical way to make the call
Choose a power station if quiet operation, simple charging and modest power use are your priorities. It is ideal for lights, devices, cameras, small fridges and overnight essentials, particularly where you camp near others.
Choose an inverter generator if you need dependable output for bigger appliances, extended remote travel, frequent battery charging or emergency backup. It is the better workhorse, provided you have room for fuel and can operate it responsibly.
Before your next trip, write down every appliance you actually plan to take, how many hours you will use it, and whether the campground permits generators.
